Lady Owls win at Brown County; boys place 2nd - IN THE NEWS - The Tribune - Tribtown.com

NASHVILLE — The Seymour girls cross country team claimed its first first-place finish of the season on Tuesday night, winning the Pre-State Invitational at Brown County’s Eagle Park.

The Lady Owls scored 91 points, while host Brown County edged Eastern Greene 103-104 for second place in the 10-team meet.

Cathedral picked up the win in the boys meet, scoring 47 points, and Seymour was second with 89. There were 11 teams in that meet.

Zoey Johnson led the Lady Owls, finishing ninth in 21:26, and Alicia Pollert was two places and nine seconds back.

“It was nice winning, but we just ran well and we had PRs (personal records) all over the place,” Lady Owls coach Spencer Sunbury said. The PRs were by Taylor Spivey, Alexis Beed, Mariah Lewis, Brianna Gillaspy, Mia Klaes, Macy Hall and Karmen Johnson.

“It was a good boost,” Sunbury added. “The girls were as excited about their times as they were about winning. It was just good to see them run a good race. We have been talking the last couple weeks about running our races a little bit differently, and they came out tonight and did that.”

Joe Trueblood led the Seymour boys with a fifth-place finish in 16:36. Jack Tormoehlen cracked 17 minutes, finishing eighth in 16:46, and the Owls’ next six runners broke 18 minutes.

“Where we ran really well, I thought, was probably the middle of our pack,” Owls coach Randy Fife said. “We had eight runners under 18 minutes, which is outstanding for us, and we had another runner that was 18:02. I feel really good about the depth that we’re developing.”

Brown County’s Rose Guingrich won the girls race in 19:42, and Cathedral’s Spencer Clapp won the boys race in 16:03.

The Seymour squads now turn their attention to Tuesday’s sectional at Bedford.
